TIP 1: If you end up with zeros in cells C7:E7, most likely your current formula, ='Budget Assumptions'!C7*'Budget Assumptions'!B16or =B6*'Budget Assumptions'!B16 , is pointing to data in the 'Budget Assumptions' sheet, but it’s not referencing the correct cells for Step 16, Part 2.

The correct formula should be =B6*'Budget Assumptions'!$B$16 . Here’s why:

  • =B6 refers to the cell in the current sheet, which contains data needed for the formula. Since the sales numbers are shown on the Product Cost worksheet, it's best to reference those cells, so as to minimize the use of off-sheet references, such as 'Budget Assumptions'!C7, where possible.
  • *'Budget Assumptions'!$B$16 refers to a fixed (absolute) cell in 'Budget Assumptions' that stays constant when copied, due to the dollar signs ($ ). Without the dollar signs, you have a relative reference, where Excel refers to C16, D16, and E16, and since those cells are blank, the dashes in cells C7:E7 are formatted zeros, because Excel treats multiplication by a blank cell the same as multiplication by zero.

This ensures the formula calculates correctly as you copy it across cells. Adjusting to this formula should align your results with what’s shown in the video.

NOTE: Amounts should be derived by formulas. You will only receive partial credit if you type in numbers in the cells for the
